Effective Advocacy
You can make a difference in cycling by participation in your local governmental public input process, or by serving on boards and commissions.
To do so you will need to know that the issues are, and what the public perception of cycling is, arguments that you are likely to encounter, and the methods to defeat them or advance them as the case may be.The good news, is that these public input meetings are now required virtually everywhere in the US, and most places in Canada.  Public officials generally pay attention. But don't expect to walk in at the last meeting and upset the apple cart with new ideas.  You have to get involved early, and have your facts collected so that you can prevail in the early discussions.  If done well, and with support from your cycling friends your ideas will then be adopted by the process.  Use these articles as your homework assignment.

Welcome to RoadGuardian.com…

…the FIRST global tool for reporting, marking and sharing the geo-locations for cycling incidents and trouble spots.

The goal of Road Guardian is simple: to save lives. Our lives. And our success in meeting this goal depends upon all cyclists reporting, marking and sharing information on the danger points and trouble spots we encounter.

Please tell all your cycling friends and buddies about Road Guardian… this can become a powerful tool for all of us to use in making cycling safer for everyone.

If you see any ways to improve Road Guardian, please don't hesitate to contact us. Feel free to pick up the phone and call me 1.800.761.0907 or email me. The strength of this tool depends upon the information reported by cyclists… information that can end up saving the lives of fellow cyclists.

We all travel life’s roads. I stand before you to ask for your cooperation in providing safe space for cyclists. When you see a cyclist on the road, please, yield to life.

–David Zabriskie, world-class cyclist and founder of Yield to Life

As a professional cyclist I have ridden my bike all over the world, but, sadly, each of the three times that I have been hit by a car has been in the United States; the worst of the accidents was in 2003.

I had just flown back to Salt Lake after my most successful season to date when, on May 23, I was in Millcreek Canyon in Salt Lake City. I was enjoying one of my favorite rides when I was hit by an SUV on the way down. The SUV made a left hand turn directly into me. I flew through the air and landed on the ground, unable to move the left side of my body. After spending a week in the hospital, I left with pins in my wrist and my leg, and some cadaver bone in my knee. The doctors did not think I would ride again...

Blurb From Website What's the best helmet to buy?

Consumer Reports published a helmet article in 2002 showing good test results for

  • Giro GilaT
  • Trek Vapor (at $40 rated as a Best Buy)
  • Giro Torrent
  • Specialized Enduro Comp

(Giro says their Transit is the same helmet as the Torrent without a visor.)

Consumer Reports can't test everything on the market, so they did not cover most of the other brands.

We think you can do just as well by finding a helmet that fits you well, is round and smooth on the outside, and has a sticker inside certifying that it meets the CPSC standard. We have a description of what we consider to be the ideal helmet, and a long piece on Helmets for the Current Season if you want more info.

Who makes the coolest helmet?

Marketing hype aside, coolness always depends on ventilation, and that depends mostly on the size of the front vents. Consumer Reports found all of the adult helmets they tested were Good for ventilation, with the Specialized M1 rated excellent. But you can look at a helmet and see 90 per cent of the ventilation story. Most riders will not need all the vents you see in the most expensive models. What will I pay for it? Our local K-Mart, Toys R Us and Wal-Mart discount stores have smooth, round, helmets meeting the CPSC standard on sale regularly for about $10 to $25, and most discount stores are under $30. Local bike shops have major brands for $35 to $150.

Many bicycle web sites are "event" oriented. Lots are interested on races or racers.

Most are seasonally oriented, and a few are advocacy oriented.

We are not disinterested in these things. We are simply more interested in the promotion of cycling as a "normal" means of transportation for every day travel needs as well as recreation and healthy exercise.
